Federico Sargentone is a cultural critic and a co-founder of the strategy & creative consultancy Countersubject.
Before establishing his practice, he served as the Associate Editor of KALEIDOSCOPE magazine, and has operated in curatorial and editorial roles for institutions like Spazio Maiocchi (Milan), Terraforma (Milan), Cell Project Space (London), and the Zabludowicz Collection (London).
Beyond his role as Creative Director of Countersubject, he is a Contributing Editor of GQ in Italy, where he contributes print feature stories, and writes a regular column titled “The Meaning of Style.”
Federico’s cultural criticism explores the dichotomies and tensions that animate the mass-niche divide, decoding stylistic codes and languages informing micro and macro trends alike. His writing is regularly featured in international media like Interview, PIN–UP, Artforum, e-flux, Spike, Dazed, AnOther, Highsnobiety, Document Journal, and 032c, where he ran a regular column titled “Runway Music.”
Beyond magazine writing, he has contributed language for monograph books and releases for artists and institutions such as Pharrell Williams, Gabriel Moses, Amnesia Scanner, PAN, Slam Jam, and Nike, for which he has contributed visual storytelling to the brand’s 50th Anniversary Book, “No Finish Line.”
Federico has lectured and moderated panels and conversations for institutions such as Fondazione Prada, Design Academy Eindhoven, Spazio Maiocchi, MACRO—Museum of Contemporary Art Rome, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and Central Saint Martins.
His commercial work encompasses creative direction, brand strategy, and editorial direction across campaigns, branding, and storytelling for brands and institutions such as Nike, Milan Municipality, VISA, Adidas, the V&A, BNP, and Moncler, among others.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan, and a Master of Arts in Culture, Criticism, and Curation from Central Saint Martins, London.
He lives and works in Milan.
